From a small Island off the coast of North Island, New Zealand, this much sought-after Nikau has a large, thick trunk, a massive crownshaft and long leaves with unusually wide leaflets.
Trunk up to 15 m, stout, covered in grey-green leaf scars, otherwise green. Crownshaft 0.6 -1 m long, dark green, smooth, bulging. Fronds up to 3 m long; leaflets to 1 m, closely set sometimes over lapping, ascending. Spathes about 300 x 150 mm., between pink and yellow, caducous.
Germinate in vitro in gelatin, agar or other medium. Pre-soak seeds for 3 days in warm water and sow in containers. Germination takes 2 to 4 months.
