This largest and most magnificent of all Bromeliads is native to the barren highlands of the Andes in Bolivia and Peru.
It forms a giant rosette of stiff, broad leaves atop a stout trunk to 3 m tall. It has a remarkable flower spike and can reach about 10 m tall.
It adapts relatively well to warm temperate climates without extremes of heat or cold in USDA Zones 9 and 10.
Germination: Sow seeds in sowing mix + vermiculite or perlite. Temperature:20-25 C or 69-77 F Keep constantly moist, not wet. Germination takes 1 -2 months.
