A medium-sized, deciduous tree with dark bark, oblong, leathery, shiny green leaves and tiny flowers.
Flowers are followed by cherry-sized fruits that are edible but rather bland in taste and somewhat reminiscent of dates and plums.
It has been in cultivation for thousands of years for its fruits and is best suited to temperate climates in USDA Zone 7 to 10. Germination: Soak seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Cold stratify in moist sowing mix for 2-3 months. Sow seeds 1cm in coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Then keep bright and constantly moist but not wet.
