A large, dry deciduous desert shrub or small tree rarely more than 6 m tall with sparsely branched, upright stems that hold small, green leaves during the short rainy season and produce clusters of small, red flowers at the ends of the branches.
It is native to Sonora, Mexico. Once established, Fouquieria macdougalii will grow with minimal watering and care and is an excellent choice for desert gardening in USDA Zones 9 and above. Germination: Cover seeds only slightly with substrate: coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet. Germination takes 3-6 weeks.
