This attractive, perennial sedge is widely distributed, in southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand and southern South America, where it grows in large colonies, in salt marshes, dunes and estuaries.
It generally reaches up to 1.5 m (4 ft.) in height and develops pointed culms, rounded leaves and purplish-brown flowers. In South Africa, Juncus krausii is highly appreciated for the weaving of traditional sleeping mats.
It also makes a good ornamental for warm temperate and some tropical climates.
Germination: Direct sow either in late fall or early spring. Press the seed into the surface of the soil, compacting the soil very firmly. For spring planting, mix the seeds with moist sand and store in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination.
