This moderately large bromeliad forms rosettes of broad, bluish gray leaves with spiny edges and long, thin, recurving tips.
The short, upright inflorescence has pale to reddish bracts and greenish-blackish flowers. It is native to cloud forests, dry forests and scrubland on steep, rocky slopes in dry Andean valleys in Peru between 2000 and 3300 m.
Puya densiflora would make an attractive and robust ornamental for warm temperate regions but is practically unknown in cultivation.
