A most impressive large shrub or small to medium tree rarely to about 25 m tall with large, leathery, ribbed, glossy dark green leaves to 18 cm long, that are silvery to coppery underneath. The large, bell-shaped flowers are usually a deep, scarlet red and a large tree in full bloom is a sight not easily forgotten.
Rhododendron arboreum is native to mixed forests from the Himalayas to China, Thailand and Sri Lanka between 1500 and 3600 m and is the national flower of Nepal as well as the state flower or state tree of several Indian states.
It makes a breathtaking ornamental for temperate and warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 8 and above. Germination: Cover seeds only slightly with substrate: coir or sowing mix + perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet.
