This herbaceous perennial in the Iris family grows in humid, elevated areas of tropical Africa, from Nigeria in the West to Kenya in the East and down to South Africa.
It forms a rosette of basal, lanceolate leaves and an upright inflorescence to about 1 m tall with clusters of tiny, star-shaped, blue flowers with yellow anthers, followed by oval-shaped black fruits.
Aristea angolensis makes a lovely and robust ornamental and is hardy to USDA Zone 7. Germination: Sow 1cm in coir or sowing mix + perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet. Germination takes 3-6 weeks.
