A striking, evergreen shrub or small tree rarely more than 10 m tall with simple, small green leaves that are pale grayish green below and masses of brilliant, bright red flowers.
Native to southern Chile and Argentina, Embothrium coccineum is one of the best ornamental trees for temperate climates. Germination: Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours, then cold stratify for 2-3 months in moist sowing mix. Sow 1cm deep in coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet.
