A herbaceous shrub to 1.5 m tall with fairly large, entire, finely hairy leaves and pale purple to white flowers followed by round, red fruits.
Lycianthes crassipetala is widely distributed in tropical forests from northeastern India to China and New Guinea between 100 and 2300 m. Germination: Soak seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Cover only slightly with substrate: coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet. Germination takes 3-6 weeks.
