Widespread from the Caribbean and Mexico through most of South America, this impressive grass is a typical pioneer plant and found in many different, usually disturbed habitats.
Its strap-like leaves are arranged in a distichous manner and make the top of each shoot look like a fan.
An easy ornamental for the tropics but with some invasive potential. In South America, Gynerium sagittatum is widely used as a source for fibers in the manufacture of handicrafts, hats, baskets, mats and the like. Germination: Light germinator! Only sprinkle on the surface of the substrate + slightly press on. Substrate: coir or sowing mix + perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet. Germination takes 4-6 weeks.
