A rare, large tree, up to 40 m tall, endemic to New South Wales, Australia, where it grows on flats, near swamps and streams, along roads, or in pastures, at moderate to higher elevations, up to 1200 m.
Its thick trunk is covered by peeling brownish-gray bark and it has narrow to lanceolate, pale green leaves. In its natural habitat, it is considered endangered, primarily due to land clearing. Eucalyptus macarthurii will adapt well to humid warm-temperate areas and it can be planted as an ornamental or windbreak.
