A deciduous shrub native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia.
It is rarely more than 3 m tall with long, upright, spiny branches that are arching towards the tip, pinnate leaves and countless, usually pale pink flowers followed by red fruits in autumn that are popular for teas and purees.
It is the most popular species used as a rootstock for grafting rose cultivars. Germination: Sow 1cm in coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet. Germination takes 3-6 weeks.
