A small deciduous shrub, rarely more than 1m (3 ft.) tall, native in the Western half of North America.
It has thorny stems, pinnately compound leaves and showy pink flowers, followed by clusters of red-orange hips. The fruits are an excellent source of Vitamin C and can be used in marmalades, jellies, cakes and teas.
Will grow well in temperate climates and tolerates a moderate amount of snow. Germination: Scarify then cold stratify seeds. Sow 1cm in coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite. Keep bright and constantly moist but not wet. Germination takes 3-6 weeks.
